Some say that Christopher Johnson McCandless also known as Alexander Supertramp was a very different person who expressed his emotion strangely and was alone. But through research via the internet I found out that Chris was not alone and there were many similarities between him and the people who though like him. Some of the people who expressed themselves like him were, Jack London, Jon Krakauer, Everett Ruess, Leo Tolstoy, and Henry David Thoreau.

Chris and Jack London are very similar in the fact that London himself tried to live in the Alaskan wilderness and he only lasted a month before realizing how difficult it actually was and came back into society. But what drove him into the wilderness and the way he felt for the wilderness is what makes Jack and Chris alike. Both Jack and Chris believed that the wilderness was a magnificent place where nature was just filled with beauty. Also, they were alike in the fact that they both chose to go to the wilderness and were not forced to live there like the book Brian’s Hunt by Gary Paulson. Finally, both Chris and Jack felt that when fulfilling this dream of living in the wilderness it made them feel like they had achieved something greater than themselves.

Two people that Chris was similar to who in turn were very similar to themselves were, Leo Tolstoy and Henry David Thoreau. Chris was very similar to both of these men in the fact that all three of them did not care of the ideals of the American Government and they wanted to live in freedom without people telling them what to do. Additionally, they wanted to get away from society and from the nag of people and their problems they wanted to live on their own by their own rules, and by taking their own risks of life and death.

Another person that Chris shows similarities with is Jon Krakauer the author of the book. He shows similarities to Chris in the fact that Jon himself was a wilderness man trying to climb the Devils Thumb. After a couple years out of college Chris stopped talking to his family and did his own thing so to speak. He left California, and went to Mexico in a canoe, then hitched hiked his way to Alaska and made many stops on his way meeting new people and expressing his feelings toward his journey with other people. And Jon Krakauer did the same, one year after college he spent three weeks by himself in the wilderness of the Stikine Icecap region of Alaska and climbed a new route on the Devils Thumb; he then made his was to Cerro Torre in the Andes and found himself at a jagged peak looking down feeling great for how he was on his own.

The last person that Chris McCandless connects to is Everett Ruess. He connects to Ruess in the fact that they both went into an uncivilized place by themselves with little food and supplies and tried to live off of the land and both failed. Chris failed in the fact that he could not find food and died, and Ruess failed in the fact that he didn’t have any supplies but two donkeys and disappeared and was never found. Both of them could not live off the land, and made grave mistakes costing them their lives.
